A Dietitian’s Food List for Healty Sources of Potassium

Many of us are SUPER low in potassium and need simple ways to add more into our daily diet to increase energy, metabolism and improve digestion. So, here is a list of my favorite foods with potassium and how you can add them to your daily or weekly routine to help!

Dietitian Approved Potassium Food List:

  • Berries

  • Oranges

  • Orange Juice

  • Strawberries

  • Kiwi

  • Apples

  • Sweet potatoes

  • Cooked and cooled russet potatoes 

  • Beets (yes, I know I am probably alone on that one)

  • Beans

  • Peas 

  • Meat 

  • Beef sticks 

How to add them to your diet:

  • Berries in yogurt or smoothies

  • Oranges for snacks

  • Any fruit for snack or a side for a meal

  • Mexican dishes for beans and meat

  • Cooked and cooled potatoes in the fridge for grab and go snack or to add to a salad

  • Beets in salads (don’t knock it until you have tried it!)

  • Beef sticks in your purse for emergency snacks 

And to top it off, add this POTASSIUM RICH SMOOTHIE to really boost your levels.

*If you find that you have low potassium after taking the HTMA test, a daily smoothie like this can be really helpful because it can take several weeks or months to increase if you’re super stressed or burned out. P.S. You may notice that I don’t have bananas on my list and that’s simply because I don’t like them :) BUT many people do so I thought I would add that to the smoothie recipe. Plus it' adds a smoother and thicker texture to the smoothie!

POTASSIUM RICH SMOOTHIE:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 of ripe banana

  • 1-2 cups of mixed berries of choice

  • Small handful of spinach for a veggie boost!

  • 1 cup of greek yogurt

  • 1 tbsp of honey

  • Pinch of cream of tartar (this is a source of potassium!)

  • 1/2 cup of ice

Blend until smooth! Add more or less ice for desired thickness. You may also need to add some water or milk/milk alternative if it won’t blend fully or if you want it to be a thinner texture.

Serve and enjoy immediately!
